“Tony Ferguson’s Struggles Continue: Bobby Green Secures Third-Round Submission Win at UFC 291

Tony Ferguson faced another setback in his career at UFC 291, as he suffered a third-round submission loss to Bobby Green in a main card bout held at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Initially, Ferguson showcased his sharpness in the opening minutes of the fight, landing punches from the outside and even scoring a knockdown. However, his momentum was interrupted by an accidental eyepoke from Green.

After Ferguson had time to recover, Green found his rhythm and started landing significant strikes in a closely contested round. Round 2 proved to be a dominant one for Green, as he executed a takedown early on, assuming control on the ground and delivering impactful ground-and-pound.

Although Ferguson managed to get back to his feet, he couldn’t find much success there either, though he finished the round with a strong flurry of combinations.

The third round followed a similar pattern, with Green continuously finding his target against Ferguson. Despite having the option to coast and secure a decision win, Green pushed on and eventually submitted Ferguson with an arm-triangle choke. This loss adds to Ferguson’s six-fight losing streak since his last victory over Donald Cerrone, which came via doctors stoppage in the second round back in June 2019.

It’s worth noting that most of Ferguson’s recent losses have come against top-tier competition. His losing streak began with a defeat to Justin Gaethje in an interim title fight, followed by losses to Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, and Nate Diaz, all of whom are either highly ranked or have fought for UFC titles. In comparison, Bobby Green represents a step down in competition, as he had struggled in his own recent fights, with a record of 2-4 and one No Contest in his last seven outings.

Considering the current state of his career, Ferguson may need to contemplate retirement, even though he had previously expressed a desire to fight five more times and earn a shot at the title. Unfortunately, the road back to the top at lightweight seems highly unlikely after his loss to Green.

As Ferguson’s career moves forward, the odds of him regaining a spot among the elite fighters in the division appear to be more daunting than ever before.”
