President Arif Alvi announces 90-day remission in sentences

 

On Tuesday, 18 April 2023, President Dr. Arif Alvi declared that prisoners convicted for life would receive a special remission of 90 days. It will give a very positive step toward prison reform. And it will provide relief to prisoners who have been in jail for an extended period. They would feel great to meet their loved ones on this beautiful occasion of Eid.

Those convicted of murder, anti-state activities, sectarianism, and acts of terrorism will not receive the particular suspension of 90 days granted by the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi.

The President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi, granted the special remission on the advice of the Prime Minister. Because he has the powers under Article 45 of the Constitution to do so.

President, Dr. Arif Alvi told that the remission will apply to all other convicts except death-sentenced prisoners. The special remission of 90 days for prisoners convicted for life will not apply to those convicted of murder or espionage.

Also, it will not apply to anti-state activities or subversion, sectarianism, Zina, dacoity, kidnapping/snatching, drugs, and terrorist acts. Moreover, President Arif Alvi said that it will not apply to those undergoing sentences under the Foreigners Act of 1946.

Male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above and have undergone at least 1/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in a homicide and involved in terrorist acts. They will also be applicable to avail of the remission.

Female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above and have served at least 1/3rd of their sentence. President, Arif Alvi said that they will be allowed for remission. Those who are accompanying children and serving sentences for crimes other than guilty crimes and homicide will also be eligible for special remission.

President, Arif Alvi told that Juveniles who have served 1/3rd of their sentence, except those convicted for culpable homicide and terrorist acts. They will also benefit from remission.
