High court disqualifies AJK premier for contempt

On Tuesday, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court ruled that Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was no prolonged qualified to act as both a lawmaker and as premier due to allegations of contempt.

Ilyas allegedly made disparaging statements and accused the judges of interfering with how the government processes.

Due to allegations of contempt, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court removed Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas from both his positions as a legislator and as the leader of the country.

Ilyas received notices from the AJK superior courts the day before asking him to clarify his stance on making disparaging remarks about the judiciary in public talks. The AJK High Court and Supreme Court have summoned the prime minister to appear.

Multimillion-Dollar Saudi education

Court injunction prevented the completion of the Saudi education project. Additionally, he spoke out against court orders to reopen tobacco facilities that had engaged in billion-dollar tax evasion.

He was found guilty of speaking ill of the court and given a punishment by the high court’s full bench today.

The court argued to be made aware of Ilyas’ criticism of the judiciary and did not accept his repentance.

Ilyas’ disqualification has resulted in the dissolution of the whole AJK cabinet.

Political tensions increased due to elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

14th Prime Minister

Ilyas was the premier of AJK for less than a year and is a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) member. On April 18, 2022, he became the region’s 14th prime minister without resistance.

Illyas presented candidature papers for AJK premier after Niazi’s resignation.

No-confidence move: AJK PM resigns from office

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) nominated Chaudhry Yasin.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan nominated Ilyas as the party’s nominee for the position of prime minister.

The unified opposition abstained from the voting. Ilyas was elected prime minister with 33 votes.
